Breanna’s car breaks down. Hollie and Shelby walk out into their front yard to help. Youth Pastor Brian stops to offer assistance. A drunk pill-popping white guy kills all four.

Cops take him alive.

A black male has car trouble.

Cops shoot him dead between the eyes.

An alt-right white supremacist kills nine precious souls of color in a prayer meeting.

Cops converge on his car…and buy him a hamburger as lunch draws nigh.

A young black male leans on a pellet gun in Walmart.

Cops shoot him dead between the eyes.

A non-black terrorist plants bombs across the city and shoots a cop point-blank.

Cops take him alive.

A 12-year-old black child plays with a pellet gun in a park.

Cops shoot him dead between the eyes.

Don’t burn a building, we whitefolk say.

Surely there’s something else you can do.

Your marches scare us, we whitefolk say.

Surely there’s something else you can do.

Don’t block traffic, we whitefolk say; we have many miles to travel to the nests to which we white-flighted to get away from you.

Surely there’s something else you can do.

Don’t kneel during the song that celebrates the slave unable to find refuge from the gloom of the grave, we whitefolk say.

Surely there’s something else you can do.

We want to help, we really do.

By acknowledging that there really is a problem?

No.

By not automatically engaging in knee-jerk defense of whiteness at the mere mention of the problem?

No.

By recognizing that white-privilege doesn’t mean riches or power; only that we don’t have to fear death when we forget to execute a left-turn signal?

No.

By agreeing there are a few bad cops? By agreeing that while the vast majority of cops are good, the good cops also contribute to the problem when they defensively protect the bad cops? By understanding that an indictment of the bad cops is not a blanket attack on all cops?

No, no, and no.

We will help by pointing out that black people are killing black people in Chicago.

We will help by scouring the record for a previous infraction by the victim.

We will help by insisting that you say our lives matter, too, when you say your lives matter.

Let us help.

What do you have to lose?
